Mount Athos
The Holy Mountain

  • Fourth day
  • Day 4 - They had been having an all-night vigil in Agiou Pauou monastery, so there was no service to go to when we got up at 6.30. There are not many monks in this monastery, though there were plenty of Orthodox pilgrims, but nobody seemed to know when the morning service would be (and, indeed, whether there would be any breakfast after it. So we ate the last of our emergency muesli bars, dried apricots and "bake rolls", a Greek toasted disc an inch or so across with a hole in the middle, which is very light and quite appetising if there is no breakfast around! And then we set off in order to have some of the walk in shade before the sun got too high and hot.
